How These Three Free Modules Are Organized

Module 1: Principles of Feng Shui

What is the mission of this site?

To create awareness, overall appreciation and understanding of Feng Shui Concepts and Theories. Strong emphasis on the understanding of Applied Feng Shui Practises for modern living.

The Objectives:

1. Review and interpret classical research materials on Feng Shui.

2. Make Feng Shui theories, concepts and templates easily available to the public. For example by merging technology with Feng Shui.

Why use the word GEOMANCY and not FENG SHUI?

In the Far East e.g. Singapore and Malaysia, many Feng Shui Practioners include the word Geomancy in their company name instead of Feng Shui. For example: ABC Geomancy Consultancy, I Ching Geomancy Center, Modern Geomancy Services etc.

The main reason is because these Practioners do not only offer Feng Shui consultations but many other services such as choosing a name for a newborn, change of name, mapping a person's Heaven Chart using Pillars of Destiny, Face, Palm reading and more. The services are varied.

You can say that a Geomancer " serves his client from the day they were born to the day when they die ".

Similiarly, Geomancy.net's aim is to provide you with a comprehensive range of useful Feng Shui, Chinese Astrology and Destiny resources and computerised tools.

This site currently does not cover the "Western" variation of Feng Shui i.e. 9 Star Ki but will do so at a later stage.

Less emphasis is also placed on YIN Form of Feng Shui for the dead as it is not so popular today.

You will also get a balanced view of acceptable Traditional Feng Shui practises and controversial subjects.

For example: some Feng Shui Practitioners do not believe in the use of the "Bagua mirror" as a cure. There are many more differing views on other topics. We will find out later in this free course.

Chapter 1: Introduction to Feng Shui

The words Feng Shui in Chinese literally means Wind and Water. In Asia, it is popularily called Geomancy. And a practitioner is known as a Geomancer. Geomancy emcompass not only Feng Shui but also the various other Chinese divinity methods.

The Chinese have long observed that some surroundings are better then others, and for centuries they have used geomancy to improve the quality of life.

Today, Feng Shui has evolved into a refined art used to enhance luck and well-being through the modifications of layout and orientation of work-places and homes and is gaining popularity in the West.

The aim of Feng Shui is a complete harmony and a deep sensitivity with the natural order. Many aspects of Feng Shui are based on intuition (sixth sense) and commonsense.

For example, as the probability of a fire starting in the kitchen is much higher than in other rooms;it was felt that one should not sleep in a bedroom which is above the kitchen:-

There once a Feng Shui practitioner who had advised his client to walk up to his office at the 18th storey. He faithfully followed the advice until he retired at 55 years of age as a clerk for over 25 years!

We need to get a right start in the home and office with good advice on Traditional Authentic Feng Shui. Good Feng Shui concepts are designed to alter the environment to our advantage.

Chapter 2: The Luo Shu Square

The Legend of the Giant Tortoise

According to ancient Chinese legends, a giant tortoise surfaced from the River Lo in central China around 4,000 years ago. The ancient Chinese found a pattern on a tortoise shell (refer to the extreme left picture above). There were circular dots of numbers on the giant tortoise that were arranged in a three-by-three nine grid pattern on it's shell.

The pattern of numbers on the giant tortoise in any given direction i.e. horizontal, vertical or diagonal all add up to a total of 15 (refer to the middle picture above). This is equal to the 15 days in each of the 24 cycles of the Chinese solar year.

In ancient times, the Hebrew used the same identical `magic square' which they referred it as the Square of the planet Saturn or the Square of the Earth.

Significance of the arrangements of the numbers on the giant tortoise feature prominently in the following:

1. The Chinese system of time dimensions also takes into account the number Nine (9). Here, time is divided into 9 ages, each lasting 20 years: Three 20 year ages make up one period. A full cycle consists of a total of 180 years. Each period is assigned a number, from one to nine.

2. The Luo Shu Square with its 3 x 3 grid or nine sectors is also used in Compass School Feng Shui called The Flying Star Theory (Xuan Kong Fei Xing). The Luo Shu Square helps the Feng Shui practitioner to analyze a site, a house, a flat (apartment) and/or an office space or building. It is used to unlock the time dimension of Feng Shui and allows the practitioner to accurately know when is the best time to make changes to the site, the home or the interior decoration.

Chapter 4: Introduction to Yin & Yang

The twin concepts of Yin and Yang are peculiar to ancient Chinese cosmology. Yin and Yang are symbolized by the sun and the moon. They are the two opposing forces active in the universe.

Yin is said to exist in Yang and Yang exists in Yin. This changing combination of negative and positive, dark and light, cold and hot which keeps the world spinning creates Qi or the life giving force of the universe.

Earth, moon, dark, femine, negative, absorbing, receptive, winter, soft, cold, still broken & even.

Heaven, sun, bright, fiery, moving, odd, powerful, masculine, active, summer.

The female principle of yin is associated with the earth, with the North and cold. Originally, Yin means `shady side' which is the side of a mountain which is not facing the sun. The word is also used to mean the dark, cold room in which ice was stored in summer. Yang is related to Heaven, South, the Emperor, the dragon and all uneven numbers are yang-numbers.

In the Eight Trigrams: Yin-lines are "broken" e.g the trigram while Yang-lines are continuous and "unbroken". For example, trigram has three Yang unbroken lines.

Chapter 5: The Importance of the Five Element

The core of Chinese sciences of the Universe: Feng Shui, the Chinese Astrology and various other Divinity methods revolves around the understanding of the importance of the Five Elements. These elements are Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal and are considered the building blocks of life.

According to ancient Chinese, these Five Elements are interactive, shape and stimulate our daily life.

It is important to understand that there is a natural order in which leads to harmony, prosperity and happiness.

The productive sequence is as follows: Water nourish plants and trees: producing Wood, Wood makes Fire which burnt into ashes to form Earth, Earth is the source of Metal. Metal can be condensed to water or can be melted into liquid i.e. `Water'. Therefore this process is known as the productive sequence.

There is also a destructive sequence, which is the cause of bad events and calamities.

This is a result of an imbalance or a disturbance to the natural order. This is where: Water puts out Fire; Fire melts Metal; Metal breaks Wood; Wood (roots of plants) penetrates the Earth; and Earth is absorbed Water.

In some cases, Feng Shui experts will advice you to place a neutralizing element to avoid such harmful effects. We will get to hear more about the Five Elements in later chapters.

The Ten Heavenly Stems reflect the plane of Heaven on the Chinese compass. This Ten Heavenly stems by combining with the Twelve Chinese Zodiac Animals (Earthly Branch) forms the basis of the Chinese Calendar System.

Chapter 3: The Nine Periods of Feng Shui Time Cycle

The 9 periods of the Chinese calendar originated from the 9 numbers on the back of the Giant tortoise. Each period consists of 20 years.

1 Cycle of the lunar calendar consists of 180 years :

Each cycle is divided into 3 groups: Upper, Middle and Lower. Each group comprise 3 periods. Each period is 20 years.

We are now under the Period 7 of the lower period (Year 1984 to Year 2003).

We will be entering PERIOD 8 in the year 2004.

Each of the 9 periods have a number each and in this period (Year 1984 to Year 2003), the reigning number is 7. This number is said to be auspicious and considered to bring luck and good fortune if one includes the number 7 to i.e. telephone number, car number or house number etc..
